Mile, Yunnan: A Red-Brick Art Village and a Century-Old Wine Estate

If you've already done Lijiang and Dali and want a quieter, more refined side of Yunnan, Mile (弥勒) is the answer. This small city in southeast Yunnan packs three rare things into one day: an entire village of red-brick art buildings, vineyards first planted by French missionaries in the 1860s, and a bamboo-raft ride past limestone peaks in the morning mist.

Here's what a day in Mile looks like, and why it's the highlight of our 6-day, 5-night private Yunnan tour.

Mile, Yunnan: A Red-Brick Art Village and a Century-Old Wine Estate

Dongfengyun (东风韵): A Town That Is a Work of Art

Dongfengyun is a cluster of curving red-brick buildings spread across about 3.69 km², designed mostly by Yunnan sculptor Luo Xu. Every building is both architecture and a permanent art installation, with an art museum, boutique hotels, restaurants and walking paths through the vineyards.

  • Kaleidoscope art museum — more than a dozen wine-bottle-shaped structures, a nod to the region's vineyards and the most photographed spot in town
  • 50% Cloud restaurant — dining inside red-brick walls, with interiors by Hong Kong's Cheng Chung Design
  • Explore at an easy pace — the main path runs about 2.2 km, with a shuttle for anyone who'd rather not walk the whole way

Photo tip: the brick glows warmest in soft morning or late-afternoon light. White, cream or purple clothing stands out beautifully against it.

Yunnan's Wine Estate: Chinese Wine with French Roots

Mile's vines go back to the 1860s, when French missionaries brought grapes to the area. The land is now home to Yunnan Red, a wine brand a whole generation of Chinese drinkers grew up with. The estate sits at about 1,480 m, covers roughly 1,600 hectares of vineyards and produces up to four million bottles a year.

  • A tasting unlike anywhere else — reds from heritage grapes such as Baco Noir and Isabella, whites from Niagara; flavours you won't find in European vineyards
  • A wine-paired dinner — our itinerary includes a special meal matched with the estate's wines
  • Easy to reach — Mile is about 150 km from Kunming, roughly 35 minutes by high-speed train

Note: wine is optional. Grape juice and other non-alcoholic drinks are available for non-drinkers.

Bamboo Rafting Through a Misty Forest

Before the art village, we start the morning on a bamboo raft through the Sansheng Sansu forest. Still water, tall trees and a light mist quiet everyone down without anyone asking. Along the way you'll see limestone peaks reflected on the water.

  • No effort needed, so it suits older travellers and children
  • The mist is thickest early in the morning; forest and water conditions vary by season
  • Bring a light windbreaker, as it can be cool on the water in the morning

Who It Suits, and Tips Before You Go

Mile is for travellers who would rather slow down than tick off sights: couples, families travelling with their parents, art and architecture lovers, and wine fans looking for something new.

  • Weather: at about 1,500 m, Mile is mild all year; November to April is the driest stretch, which makes it ideal for the cool season and Songkran holidays
  • Shoes: wear comfortable shoes, as the art village involves a fair bit of walking
  • Food: vegetarian, vegan and halal menus are available with advance notice
  • Fun fact: the name Mile (弥勒) is the Chinese word for Maitreya, the future Buddha
