Fuxian Lake, Yunnan: A Guide to the Lake with a Pink Beach
Ask most travellers about lakes in Yunnan and they will name Erhai in Dali or Lugu Lake. Fewer have heard of Fuxian Lake (抚仙湖), about 1.5 hours south of Kunming. That is exactly why it is worth the trip: sapphire water, a long quiet shoreline, and a stretch of pink sand you will not find in most guidebooks.
What makes Fuxian Lake special
- Depth and clarity. Fuxian Lake reaches about 155 metres deep, the deepest lake in Yunnan and one of the deepest freshwater lakes in China. Its water is among the clearest in the country.
- "Yunnan's Maldives." On sunny days the water turns blue and turquoise, framed by palms and sandy beaches. Chinese travellers often compare it to the Maldives.
- Size. At around 212 square kilometres, it is the third-largest lake in Yunnan, after Dian Lake and Erhai.
- Mysteries underwater. Divers have reported stone structures on the lake bed, which keeps it popular with history lovers.
The pink beach (Red Beach)
On one part of the shore, the sand and pebbles turn soft pink and red against the blue water. It is quiet, photogenic and rarely crowded. Come in the late afternoon, when the light warms the colours, and bring a hat: the plateau sun is strong.
How to get to Fuxian Lake from Kunming
Fuxian Lake sits in Chengjiang, Yuxi, roughly 60–70 km from central Kunming. Public buses run to Chengjiang, but reaching the quieter beaches still needs a car. The simplest option is private transport. On our 6-day Yunnan private tour, Fuxian Lake is Day 2, with a private vehicle and lunch included before continuing south to Mengzi.
Best time to visit Fuxian Lake
The lake is beautiful all year. Autumn to spring brings the most sunny days and the bluest water. Summer is greener, with afternoon showers. Bring layers: mornings by the lake can be cool even when afternoons are warm.
Tips for visiting
- Swimming, camping and fires are not allowed in most areas, to protect the water.
- UV is strong at 1,700 m altitude. Use sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
- Respect the beach. Take nothing from the pink shore except photos.
